How To Make Your Own Free Ringtone
| Misc - Cell Phones |
If you are tired of buying ringtones, here is how you can make your own ringtones and send them to your cell phone. The first thing you need is an audio editing software. A nice free one I have used is
Select a song you want for your ringtone, and make a copy of it. Open it up in Audacity, and listen to it and find a 30 second segment (no longer than 30 sec.) that you would like your ringtone to be. Highlight the parts you don't want, and delete them. Since your ringtone will be playing through the very small speaker on your cell phone, the audio quality won't be good. You can use this to your advantage since a lower quality file will give a much smaller file size.
<
To do this in Audacity, click on the filename as shown circled in orange in the image to the right, and go to the highlighted dropdown. Select 16 bit.
Also to further reduce the file size, put the file into mono.
Next, you need to save your file. However Audacity has its own file format. So in order to save your new ringtone as an MP3 file, you need to export it as an MP3 file. To do this, just click on FILE, and Export As MP3.
Now that you have your completed ringtone, its time to get it to your phone. The most common way supported by most cell phones (sadly, the Razr won't do this..) it to just email your new ringtone to your cell phone as an attachment.
The email you use is your cell phone number and your carrier's email URL. For example for a Verizon customer, the email to their cell phone would be: 6145551212@vzwpix.com
Here is a list of a few cell phone company email addresses where cell_number is you cell phone number:
- AT&T cell_number@mms.att.net
- Sprint cell_number@messaging.sprintpcs.com
- T-Mobile cell_number@tmomail.net
- Verizon cell_number@vzwpix.com
If your cell carrier isn't listed, or you aren't sure, you can also just send a text message to your email account. Then you can get the address to send your ringtone back to your cell phone.
After you email your new ringtone to your cell phone and you receive it on your cell, select Options, then Save As Ringtone. it is important that you Save Save as a ringtone instead of Save Sound. If you don't have the option to Save As Ringtone, then your phone won't support this method of getting a ringtone.
Also one word of caution, usually you only get one chance to save a file as a ringtone. So make sure you make the proper selection the first time. Otherwise you will have to resend your ringtone to your cell phone.
You now have a new ringtone! Usually it is now your default ringtone. From here you can easily make it a ringtone for a specific person, or just keep it as your default ringtone.
