So the next question is, what should I backup? The best answer is, everything! Specifically the entire hard drive. This insures that you have it all. But sometimes this is not an option. So the next best shing is your entire user folder. On Windows XPm go to "Documents and Settings", and on Vista go to "Users" and you should see your username in the list:

Just copy this entire folder over to your backup drive, which should contain your music, photos, documents, and bookmarks in your favorites folder.

NOTE: This will not backup your application files. The best thing to do with application files is to re-install them on the new computer.

Alternatively, you can also back up your files on to a network share of another computer, or a server. To do this, just click on Places then on Connect to Server as shown to the right. Change the Service Type drop down to Windows Share.

Then enter the following information as follows:

Server: Computer Name

Share: Shared Folder Name

User Name: Your Username

Click the Connect button and you will be asked for your password. Make sure you put in the same Domain name, or workgroup name in the Domain: window, or you won't be able to login. Also make sure you check the button Remember password until you logout. Click the Connect button and you should have an Icon on the desktop for your network share. Just double click it, and just copy over what files you need from your dead computer.

So now you should have all of your data pulled off of your windows computer that won't boot. Hopefully this will help you out as much as it has helped me.

Good luck!
